<!--zsunWhat is the
difference between
comet, asteroid,
meteoroid,meteorite,
meteors,shooting stars, perseids?enjoystudy.blogspot.comzsunWhat is Asteroid?
Asteroids are rocky
and metallic objects
that orbit the Sun
but are too small to
be considered
planetszsunThis is a picture of an
asteriod which is
revolving around
the sun.Photo from Nasa.govzsunThese Asteroids are
composed of rack and
metal.
The Largest asteroid is of
500 miles diameter. (Dia. of our Moon is 2100 miles)zsunIf the size of an asteroid is
small (ie. 50m or less),
it is METEOROID.
If the meteoroid is sucked
by Earth and burns and
gives light, then this streak
of light is METEOR or
SHOOTING STAR.zsun If the meteoroid survived
its passage through the
Earth's atmosphere and
safely landed in the
Earth's surface, then
it is
METEORITE.zsunMeteoriteCan you tell whether this stone is a
Meteor, Meteorite or Asteroid ?zsunThis is a meteorite.zsunThis is a MeteoritezsunzsunWhat is COMET?This picture is a comet.
zsunComets are "dirty snowballs".
It is made up of a NUCLEUS
(solid, frozen ice, gas and dust),
a gaseous COMA (water vapor,
CO2, and other gases)
and a long TAIL (made of dust and
ionized gases).zsunComet tails always point away
from the Sun.zsunComets orbit round the sun.zsunWhat is Swift-tuttle?
It is a comet.
It was discovered by Mr.Swift & Mr.Tuttle.
It comes near the Earth every 130 years.
This comet MAY collide with earth or come
very close to Earth in 2126.
zsunWatch this animation.
What happens when
the Earth reaches
August Month?
zsunThere is a shower of
Meteors in August.zsunWhy this
shower
occurs?zsunIn August, Earth goes
into the debris of
comet Swift Tuttle.Watch the animation.
Debris is shown in green colorzsunSome of this debris is
sucked by Earth and
burnt.
It is seen as a shower
of Meteors.zsunAs the area in which
this shower occurs is
PERSEUS
constellation, this
shower is known as
PERSEIDS.zsunThe peak of the shower in
2008 was in August 13.
The peak of this shower in
2009 is in August 11 and
12.zsunSo wait and watch for
Perseids every year
during the month of
August.Bye from Preeti Shivaji
